The bill aimed to allocate hefty sums, including about $50 billion for security assistance to Ukraine and an additional $14 billion for Israel. Furthermore, the House Republicans are standing firm in their demands for border fixes before considering any aid to Ukraine, showcasing a united front with their Senate counterparts. Speaker Mike Johnson articulated that additional funding for Ukraine would be contingent on substantial changes to the nation’s border security laws. President Biden, on the other hand, appeared open to potential compromises on border policies in exchange for aid to Ukraine.
The Republican senators, including Rick Scott, Ron Johnson, and Mike Lee, proposed conditioning aid to Ukraine on meeting specific metrics for reducing illegal border crossings. This move underscores the GOP’s unwavering stance on prioritizing national security and border protection.
