GOP Leaders Tackle Antisemitism at College Campuses Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

The House Oversight Committee Chairman, James Comer, is making moves to address antisemitism on college campuses. Comer, along with other Republican representatives, is visiting George Washington University to assess the encampments that are supportive of Palestine. These encampments have been labeled as “radical, antisemitic, and unlawful” and are popping up on various college campuses as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues.

Following the tour of the encampments and meetings with the university leadership, the representatives will hold a media availability to discuss their findings. This visit comes shortly after Speaker Mike Johnson and other House committee leaders announced a Republican effort to crack down on antisemitism.

Additionally, hearings are being planned to address this matter, with the House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairwoman, Virginia Foxx, indicating that she has sent notices to appear to the leaders of several universities. Furthermore, the House Oversight Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing on the Metropolitan Police Department’s reported refusal to clear the encampment at George Washington University.

The committee chairs have expressed concern over the MPD’s reluctance to provide assistance due to fears of public criticism, particularly as the university has attempted to protect its Jewish students from persecution and harassment.

The representatives’ visit to George Washington University comes ahead of an upcoming House vote on the Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023. This Act aims to require the Education Department to use a specific definition of antisemitism when enforcing federal anti-discrimination laws on college campuses.

These efforts to address antisemitism on college campuses are particularly significant as the House GOP faces challenges in their efforts to uncover evidence tying President Biden to any criminal activity or misconduct. Both the House Oversight and Judiciary committees have struggled to find conclusive evidence against the President, signaling a potential stalemate in the Biden impeachment inquiry.
