A recent trend indicates that more and more women, especially new mothers, are stepping up to take control of their safety and the safety of their families by embracing firearm ownership. This new shift has been notable across various demographics in the country, where certified instructors are witnessing an influx of women eager to learn the ins and outs of gun ownership. This phenomenon doesn’t come as a surprise, given the current climate of rising crime, economic instability, and the less-than-ideal state of affairs at our borders.
At the heart of this movement is Katie Poer Bany, the managing director of government affairs for the USCCA and Delta Defense. She explains that data reflects what many have already suspected: women are recognizing the need to protect themselves and their families in light of troubling national issues. With a talented army of over 10,000 certified instructors who are busy teaching classes daily, it’s clear that Americans want knowledge and skills to back their choice of armament. New moms, in particular, appear to be stepping into these classes in greater numbers, fueled by the instinct to shield their loved ones.
The motivations driving this upsurge are primarily tied to safety concerns. Public safety anxieties have become particularly pronounced as crime rates rise, an unsettling trend that many attribute to policies rolled out by the current administration. With concerns about border security and the fear that comes with living in uncertain times, it makes sense that more women are opting for firearms as a means of self-defense. These motivated mothers are not just choosing to buy a gun; they’re also prioritizing training to use it effectively, emphasizing that understanding how to handle a firearm is just as important as owning one.
Interestingly, a Gallup poll pointed out a partisan divide in gun ownership trends. While Democratic men showed a slight decrease in owning firearms, the broader picture indicates that gun ownership issues have become entwined with political affiliations. Unfortunately, this has turned what should be a universal right rooted in the Second Amendment into a partisan topic. The USCCA advocates against such divides, asserting that firearm ownership should not be a political battleground. It’s an issue of personal protection and fundamental rights.
As the future unfolds, there is hope that with different leadership in the White House, concerns over public safety may wane, leading to a potential leveling off in gun sales. Yet, Katie Poer Bany pointed out that the thirst for ongoing training won’t diminish anytime soon. Whether one is a new owner or a seasoned professional, honing skills at the range and participating in educational courses will remain essential. Personal safety is no laughing matter, and for many women and families, taking charge of their security is more important than ever.
