Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin has embraced a bold and assertive stance on legislation that threatens the values of his constituents. Recently, he executed a remarkable round of vetoes, dismissing a jaw-dropping 159 bills pushed by a progressive Democratic legislature. Youngkin’s firm stand against legislation that could be classified as “soft on crime” sends a clear message: he prioritizes public safety over political correctness. His rejection of a minimum wage increase to $13.50—later proposed to rise to $15—demonstrates a clear understanding of the economic realities facing employers and employees in Virginia.

As Youngkin tackled this legislative challenge, he did not merely stop at vetoing. His administration also involved itself in refining laws as he signed roughly 600 bills while amending around 160. The governor has firmly positioned himself against measures that increase the cost of living or undue burdens on businesses—like mandatory sick leave policies for mental health or repealing bans on collective bargaining for public employees. Such initiatives would likely lead to job losses and economic stagnation, elements Youngkin is determined to counteract.
Looking ahead, the road may be rocky for Republicans in Virginia, especially with looming elections and the potential strategies of a purple state electorate. Despite not being eligible for re-election himself, Youngkin’s legacy will influence the 2025 gubernatorial race, particularly with potential candidates like Lt.
