In a tale of courage and quick action, a dramatic rescue unfolded recently after a devastating flood threatened the lives of young campers at Camp Mystic. With floodwaters rising dangerously, the scene was chaotic and filled with fear, especially for the ten young counselors who were doing their best to keep the spirit brave among the frightened children. Thankfully, one hero emerged from the perilous situation: Petty Officer Scott Ruskin of the Coast Guard.
Petty Officer Ruskin had never encountered a rescue mission quite like this one in his career. Arriving on scene after battling bad weather for five to six hours, he quickly assessed the situation, filled with scared campers. Displaying impressive leadership and calmness, he took charge of the triage effort, which involved providing comfort and care to those in distress. With 200 campers being evacuated, he helped rescue an astonishing 165 victims, showcasing the extraordinary skill and bravery that define the Coast Guard.
