ICE Strikes Back: Operation Metro Surge Targets Dangerous Noncitizens

Federal agents have quietly launched Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis and already pulled at least a dozen dangerous noncitizens off the streets — a necessary, long-overdue enforcement push in a city that for years has put politics above public safety. Local reporting confirms the initial arrests involved individuals from Somalia, Mexico and El Salvador, and federal officials say the operation began in early December.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons has stood by his officers and the mission, making clear that the agency will not be deterred by sanctuaries or political theater. Lyons’ leadership of Enforcement and Removal Operations is no accident; he’s been tasked with restoring enforcement after years of lax policies that let violent offenders slip back into neighborhoods.

The Department of Homeland Security has described many of those arrested as the “worst of the worst,” citing convictions for sex offenses, gang activity, and violent crimes — exactly the kinds of people the federal government was created to remove. Washington’s decision to finally deploy resources to the Twin Cities was both predictable and righteous, given mounting evidence of fraud and criminality tied to segments of the migration surge.

Of course, the political class in Minneapolis and St. Paul reacted the way sanctuary cities always do: posture and obstruction. Mayor Jacob Frey, Governor Tim Walz and local officials have refused to meaningfully cooperate, turning public safety into a political cudgel instead of protecting their constituents. These are the predictable consequences of putting ideology ahead of law and order.

Predictably, some of the arrested individuals and their advocates have rushed to federal court with lawsuits and claims of mistaken identity — a playbook designed to bog down enforcement and generate public outrage. Those lawsuits should be handled in court, but they do not change the basic fact that federal agents found and removed dangerous people who had no business roaming free. Americans deserve officials who back the rule of law, not excuses.

Patriots should be unapologetic in supporting ICE and federal enforcement when local leaders refuse to act. This is about protecting neighborhoods, children, and hardworking taxpayers who pay the bills while political elites invite chaos with open borders and sanctuary cover. If Minneapolis wants to be a safe city again, it must stop sheltering criminals and start cooperating with the people who are simply doing their jobs to keep Americans safe.
