Another shocking example of America’s broken immigration system has come to light in Maine. A Jamaican man named Jon Luke Evans was working as a police officer while living in our country illegally. He overstayed his visa and somehow managed to get hired by the Old Orchard Beach Police Department as a reserve officer.
The situation got even worse when Evans tried to buy a gun illegally. Federal agents from ICE and the ATF arrested him last Friday in Biddeford, Maine. This man was supposed to protect and serve our communities while breaking our immigration laws every single day.
ICE officials are rightfully furious about this mess. Acting Field Office Director Patricia Hyde called the situation both comical and tragic. She pointed out that a police department knowingly hired someone who was breaking the very laws they swore to enforce.
The Old Orchard Beach Police Department gave this illegal immigrant a badge and a gun. They put him in a position of authority over American citizens while he had no legal right to be in our country. This is exactly the kind of reckless decision-making that puts families at risk.
How did our immigration system fail this badly. Evans should have been deported when his visa expired, not given a job in law enforcement. Instead, liberal policies allowed him to stay and even get hired as a cop.
This case shows why we need strong border security and immigration enforcement. ICE agents are doing their job by removing criminals and immigration violators from our communities. They deserve our support, not criticism from open-borders politicians.
American taxpayers have been paying the salary of someone who shouldn’t even be in our country. Meanwhile, qualified American citizens who could have filled that position were passed over. This is a slap in the face to every law-abiding American.
Evans is now facing deportation, which is exactly what should happen. Every sanctuary city and soft-on-immigration police department should take note. The rule of law matters, and ICE will continue arresting illegal aliens no matter what job they hold.
