A shocking but not entirely surprising incident has thrust the issue of illegal immigration into the spotlight, again. Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a Guatemalan national who somehow slipped right back into the U.S. after being deported, has been charged with the heinous crime of setting a woman ablaze on a New York City subway. Apparently, due diligence in vetting newcomers to this country isn’t exactly a priority these days.
The grisly details of the crime are hard to fathom. Zapeta-Calil, who had already been shown the door by immigration officials back in 2018, thought it would be a fine idea to use a lighter to ignite the clothing of an unsuspecting woman on the F train. Reports indicate that he wasn’t just a passive observer in this horror show; he actively fanned the flames using a shirt. One can’t help but wonder how someone who was supposed to be back in Guatemala managed to turn a subway ride into a scene straight out of a bad horror movie.
The victim, a woman who remains unidentified, tragically lost her life due to smoke inhalation and severe burns. Witnesses and police described the chilling scene as they stumbled upon a woman engulfed in flames. While officers bravely rushed to extinguish the fire, they had to confront not just a grotesque crime but also an epic failure in immigration enforcement. This incident underscores a glaring issue: how many more criminals like Zapeta-Calil are wandering the streets of American cities?

You would think that police and ICE would be working together on finding these illegal aliens who have already shown themselves to be threats. Unfortunately, the evidence suggests otherwise. Zapeta-Calil was found at the scene of his crime, cooler than a cucumber as he contemplated the fire, lighter still in his pocket. This draws questions regarding how many crimes must go unchallenged by law enforcement before action is taken.
As Zapeta-Calil heads back to court, many are left wondering if this is a singular incident or just the tip of the iceberg. Such acts of violence against innocent Americans should be a wake-up call for those still clinging to the notion that illegal immigration is a non-issue. As the mantra “Build That Wall” becomes more relevant by the day, it’s high time for a serious conversation about the integrity of America’s borders and the safety of its citizens.
