Impeachment Onslaught: What You Must Know About TX AG Paxton’s Trial

State senators in Texas are preparing for a highly anticipated trial to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton. The three-term Republican has been temporarily stripped of his duties amid allegations of corruption, including bribery and abuse of public trust. If found guilty, Paxton could be permanently banned from public service and face criminal charges. This is a significant moment for Texas, as Paxton is only the third official in the state’s history to be impeached.

Paxton has been a key figure in the Lone Star State’s legal battles against the Biden administration. He has filed more lawsuits against the administration than any other red state. However, these legal efforts have been put on hold as he fights to clear his name. Despite facing federal charges for securities and fraud since 2015, Paxton has not faced any significant consequences until now.

The impeachment case primarily centers around Paxton’s relationship with Austin real estate developer Nate Paul. It is alleged that Paxton tried to help Paul fight a federal investigation in exchange for favors and financial support. Eight of Paxton’s own deputy attorneys general reported these actions to the FBI, resulting in their termination from their positions. They have since filed lawsuits claiming wrongful termination and protection under state whistleblower policies.

The impeachment process began in May, with the Texas House voting to impeach Paxton on 20 articles of impeachment. While the House is controlled by Republicans, they largely voted against Paxton. Now, the trial will take place in the Senate, where a conviction would require two-thirds of the members to vote in favor. Paxton has requested the dismissal of the articles of impeachment, but this is unlikely to happen.

Texans are split in their opinions about the trial, with 51% of registered voters believing that Paxton’s removal from office is justified. Democrats are more inclined to support his impeachment, while Republicans are more divided. Regardless of the outcome, this trial will have significant implications for Paxton’s political future in the state.
