Iranian Sleeper Cells Threaten US as DHS Funding Hangs in Balance

Former acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf laid down a blunt warning on The Big Weekend Show on March 1, 2026: Iranian terror proxies and potential sleeper cells pose a real and present danger to the American homeland, and DHS must be fully funded to meet that threat. His message was clear and urgent — this is not the time for political theater in Washington while enemies circle and plot.

Wolf speaks from experience, having run the department charged with protecting millions of Americans and coordinating our counterterrorism efforts. He reminded viewers that any military action abroad can have consequences at home, and that DHS needs the resources to anticipate and blunt those blowback threats rather than scrambling when the unthinkable happens.

This plea comes in the middle of a bitter funding fight that has already produced a dangerous lapse for parts of DHS, after Senate Democrats blocked the House’s appropriations bill and a temporary patch expired late January. Americans should not be surprised that the political games in Washington risk tangibly weakening TSA, FEMA, Coast Guard, and cyber defenses at exactly the moment global tensions are spiking.

House Republicans have been right to call out this irresponsibility, warning that a DHS funding shutdown forces frontline personnel to work without pay and strains vital missions from disaster response to counterterrorism. For anyone who believes security is more important than scoring partisan points, the choice is obvious: fund the department and keep our people and infrastructure protected.

And make no mistake — the threat is not hypothetical. U.S. officials have long warned that Iran’s regional network of proxies could inspire lone-wolf attackers or activate sleeper cells inside the United States, and DHS has issued heightened advisories in past crises. We ignore that expertise at our peril; the choice to defund or hobble DHS is a gamble with American lives.

Patriots should be furious that Washington’s infighting risks our security while enemies plot overseas. Congress must act immediately to restore and strengthen DHS funding, secure our borders, and give law enforcement and intelligence the tools they need — not excuses. The safety of our families and the sovereignty of our country depend on lawmakers putting country before caucus.
