Kharg Island has suddenly become the choke point of the global economy, and Americans should be paying attention. In mid-March U.S. forces struck military targets on the island as Iran tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, threatening the free flow of energy and goods that keeps our country running. If the international community allows Tehran to hold shipment lanes hostage, ordinary families will pay at the pump and at the grocery store.
This is not some distant, abstract problem — Kharg is Iran’s main crude export terminal and by far the hub through which the regime moves most of its oil to market. Satellite imagery and maritime intelligence show tankers still gathering there even amid the strikes, making Kharg the fulcrum of both Iran’s economy and its leverage over global markets. Destroying or neutralizing that leverage is not warmongering, it is strategic necessity if we want stability and lower prices for hardworking Americans.
The consequences are already being felt in Main Street businesses and family budgets: fertilizer, natural gas, and refined fuels are at risk when a vital artery like Hormuz is choked off. Small businesses from bakeries to farms are reporting supply headaches and price spikes, which trickle down to every consumer and threaten food security. This is what happens when regimes that hate our values are allowed to weaponize commerce; the costs are real and immediate.
And make no mistake: taking aim at Kharg was the correct move from a national-security perspective, not a reckless provocation. Washington is rightly exploring a range of options from strikes to more coercive measures to force open the strait, and those who preach restraint while expecting markets to right themselves are living in fantasy. If our leaders want peace, they must be prepared to take the tough steps that protect American jobs and energy security.
Policy is simple and should be urgent — secure the shipping lanes, increase strategic reserves, and rebuild domestic fertilizer and energy production so we never again hand leverage over our economy to hostile actors. Intelligence analysts note Iran’s exports could be rerouted to smaller terminals, but those ports cannot replace Kharg’s capacity overnight, which means the pressure on prices and supplies will persist unless we act. Congress and the administration must treat this like the emergency it is and stop treating energy and manufacturing as afterthoughts.
Every patriotic American should demand decisive leadership: hold the line, support our troops, and make the investments that keep America independent and prosperous. The world is watching as diplomats from dozens of countries press Tehran to reopen the strait, but talk alone will not refill the tanks or restock the fertilizer warehouses. Stand with the men and women who defend our liberty and insist that protecting commerce and American livelihoods is nonnegotiable.
