In a recent episode of her show, Joy Reid, the race-baiting host of MSNBC, agreed with her guest’s outrageous claim that Christianity is rooted in white supremacy. Reid’s guest, Robert Jones, the founder of the Public Religion Research Institute, made the absurd argument that a 15th-century Catholic Church doctrine called the Doctrine of Discovery laid the foundation for the oppression and enslavement of indigenous people and Africans.
According to Jones, this Catholic doctrine, which was embraced by all of Western Europe at the time, stated that non-Christians had no human rights and could be enslaved, killed, and had their belongings stolen. Reid eagerly supported Jones’ unfounded theory, claiming that it justified European colonizers’ treatment of indigenous people and Africans in the name of Christianity.

It is truly mind-boggling that MSNBC allowed Reid to spew such racist and historically inaccurate views on their network. This is the kind of rhetoric that has contributed to MSNBC’s abysmal ratings, with viewers flocking to Fox News, which provides fair and balanced reporting.
Jones also claimed in an interview with The Guardian that many Americans still hold onto this outdated version of Christianity that believes the country was meant to be a promised land for European Christians. He argued that this belief explains the resistance to teaching African-American history in schools, as it challenges the myth of American innocence.
It is clear that Jones and Reid are simply trying to rewrite history to fit their own agenda. They are spreading divisive and false narratives about Christianity and the United States in order to further their own political goals. It is important to reject these baseless claims and uphold the truth. Christianity is not a justification for slavery and genocide, but a faith that promotes love, equality, and justice for all.
