Kamala Harris, the former vice president who never quite connected with the American public, finds herself in a pitiful predicament. With Gavin Newsom vacating the California governorship due to term limits, one might think Harris, a so-called prominent figure, would be a shoo-in for the role. But what’s this? Her own party seems to have little interest in her poorly timed political revival, marking yet another chapter in her long book of political failures.
Her fellow Democrats, still reeling from their humiliating losses in the presidential and congressional elections, are definitely not rolling out the red carpet for Harris. They recognize the elephant in the room—that Harris’ potential campaign for governor smells more like desperate political theater than a sincere effort to improve California. It’s hard enough to regain public trust, but how do they plan to do that with a candidate who can’t even personally attend a Democratic event in her own state?

It’s clear that Harris’ elitist attitude has made her nearly toxic among working-class voters. Those who begrudgingly support her still admit they’re in the dark about her plans and priorities. It’s not surprising that some California delegates feel snubbed, noting that Harris has been absent from meaningful California discourse since Trump’s inauguration. Who knew that ignoring constituents might actually backfire?
Even the Democrats eyeing the governorship themselves are divided. Some remain loyal to Harris, like Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, an unwavering friend willing to step aside if Harris leaps into the race. But others, disgusted by backroom dealings and finger-pointing over Joe Biden’s health issues, are cutting loose from the Harris camp. It’s cringe-worthy to witness the Democratic tribe unfurl as they throw shade at each other. Trust should be earned, not assumed.
Harris’ intentions seem clearer than ever. Running for governor isn’t about serving California. It’s a half-hearted attempt to gracefully bow out from the national scene. Just another fallback plan for her tarnished career. Isn’t it time for Harris to hang up the political gloves and face reality? California deserves better than a consolation prize candidate.
