Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader from Kentucky, is pushing back against the calls from within his party to impeach President Biden, stating that it would not be good for the country. This doesn’t come as a surprise, as McConnell has always been seen as someone who aligns more with the establishment and has made it clear where he stands in comparison to the Trump wing of the party.

On the other side of the aisle, Speaker Kevin McCarthy from California has been cautiously talking about an impeachment inquiry. However, McConnell believes that impeaching Biden would trivialize the process, which has been used quite liberally during the Trump presidency. He argues that this would only continue the cycle of partisan retribution and that impeachment should be a rare occurrence.
While it may seem like McConnell is being idealistic, some might call it cowardice. After all, Democrats put President Trump through not one, but two impeachment trials, along with the whole “Russian collusion” debacle. They’ve already shown that they have no qualms weaponizing impeachment for their own political gain.
Now, as the possibility of impeachment looms over Biden, the Democrats are suddenly invoking their principles. However, it’s clear that McConnell believes they have already broken every norm in the book, including their newfound love for imprisoning political opponents. With this kind of unscrupulous behavior, it begs the question of whether it’s even possible to find common ground and unite with the Democrats.
Overall, McConnell’s stance against impeaching Biden is grounded in his belief that it would not be good for the country. He sees it as a continuation of the partisan circus that has prevailed in recent years, and he’s not willing to play along. Whether his fellow Republicans will follow his lead or not remains to be seen.
