Media figures have taken another swing at the Trump administration, this time due to the Atlantic’s revelation of an accidental Signal message leak involving National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. Yet, according to a recent CBS News poll, it appears that the relentless media attacks haven’t made a dent in President Trump’s approval numbers, which remain a healthy 50 percent. Perhaps the media should consider taking a break from their bashing, but that would be far too sensible.
The CBS News poll, which captured the sentiments of over 2,600 Americans just days ago, revealed some interesting tidbits. The incident involving Waltz, who mistakenly included Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg in a group chat about plans to deal with the Houthis, was deemed “serious” by a majority. Yet, as Trump’s supporters know too well, the mainstream media’s favorite pastime of hyperventilating over every misstep does little to sway the opinions of the average American. It seems the American people know the game the media is playing all too well.

When it comes to the economy, respondents have shared a mixed bag of opinions. The poll revealed that a mere 31 percent believe the administration is appropriately working to lower consumer prices. Meanwhile, a hefty 64 percent think Trump and his team could step up their game. It’s clear that many Americans would prefer a more aggressive approach to tariff implementation as well, with 38 percent deeming the tariffs currently in place to be “just right,” and 55 percent thinking the administration has gone overboard. A staggering five percent desire more tariffs—that’s quite the rare breed of citizen.
Despite the media’s best efforts to pin inflation on Trump, he may have an ace up his sleeve. A significant 38 percent of participants in the poll acknowledge that President Biden’s economic policies are hitting harder than anything seen under the Trump administration. In fact, only 34 percent dare to point the finger at Trump for today’s elevated inflation rates. In the grand scheme of things, nearly half of those surveyed said they approve of Trump’s grasp on the economy. Given the circumstances, that’s a win most would gladly take.
Trump’s efforts to address immigration issues resonate even more favorably, with 53 percent of respondents giving him a thumbs up for his immigration policies. His plan to deport illegal migrants has found even greater favor, boasting a 58 percent approval rating. It’s clear that while the media may ramp up their criticism, many Americans appreciate the tough stance taken by the administration on immigration. However, opinions about the cuts to federal agency staff remain split. About half of the respondents threw their weight behind the initiatives, including the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), signaling support for a leaner government might be trending.
In the landscape where media narratives are crafted with little regard for reality, it’s evident that Trump’s supporters are still firmly in his corner. The continuous barrage of negative coverage might be more about selling news than any actual disapproval of the man in the Oval Office. To many, it seems that President Trump continues to be as popular as ever, much to the dismay of the media elite.
