New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s (D) latest attempt to trample on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens is hitting some serious roadblocks. It seems that her illegal 30-day concealed and open carry ban is not finding any support in other branches of the state government. And who can blame them? This overreach is just another example of excessive government control that conservatives have been warning about for years.
Even Attorney General of New Mexica Raúl Torrez (D) is speaking out against this outrageous gun ban. In a strongly worded letter to Lujan Grisham, Torrez made it clear that he will not defend her administration in the lawsuits that have been filed against this unconstitutional order. Bravo, Torrez! Finally, someone in a position of power who understands the importance of upholding the rights of every citizen.

Torrez eloquently stated that he does not believe this emergency order will make any meaningful impact on public safety. And he’s absolutely right. Banning concealed and open carry does nothing to address the underlying issues driving gun violence in our community. It’s just another knee-jerk reaction from liberals who refuse to address the real causes of crime.
And Sheriff John Allen of Bernalillo County is also taking a stand against this ridiculous ban. He courageously declared that his office will not be enforcing the order because it violates his oath to protect the Constitution. Finally, a law enforcement official who understands that punishing law-abiding citizens for exercising their constitutional right to self-defense is not the answer.
It’s refreshing to see some individuals in positions of power who are willing to defend the rights granted to us by the Founding Fathers. This ban is not only ineffective in fighting crime, but it is also a direct assault on our liberties. Kudos to Torrez and Sheriff Allen for standing up against Lujan Grisham’s unconstitutional power grab. It’s about time someone put a check on her overreach. Let’s hope that more voices of reason continue to speak out against these infringements on our rights.
