Clearly, Boasberg is less a judge and more a self-proclaimed court jester, attempting to juggle legality and theatrics with all the finesse of a three-ring circus.
His latest judicial antics included issuing a restraining order against President Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, as if judicial activism is the new national pastime. Boasberg once proposed a fantastical idea to order deportation planes—in midair no less—to turn around. It’s standard procedure to ignore the rule of law, only to threaten contempt proceedings against administration officials who dare to defy his politically motivated orders. Boasberg has taken it upon himself to act as both prosecutor and judge, clearly enjoying this two-for-one deal.
In his latest outburst, the judge pressed Deputy Assistant Attorney General Drew Ensign, claiming the government disregarded his emergency injunction issued the previous month as if it were last week’s grocery list. His theatrics reached a fever pitch as he began discussing possible contempt proceedings against the Trump administration. It’s riveting to watch an appointed judge with such a flair for drama while Congress sits idly by, twiddling thumbs and pretending everything is fine.

The latest episode in this ongoing series saw Ensign grilled mercilessly, with all the fire of a reality show’s most intense elimination round. Questions were thrown around with an almost comedic urgency, as Boasberg demanded to know just who in the administration knew what, when. And naturally, his eyebrows were about to leap off his face with indignation when presented with the reality that national security concerns prevented DOJ lawyers from divulging certain classified information. Apparently, throwing around bald accusations is more satisfying than adhering to legal standards.
And amidst all this banter, the judge declared he would decide by next week whether to proceed with contempt charges against the administration. He can hardly contain himself, claiming his “oral order,” much like a kid insisting on their right to the last cookie. Meanwhile, President Trump has definitively labeled Boasberg an “activist” judge, and calls for impeachment are echoing like a battle cry from the right. In this stage production, Boasberg is the show-stealer, but the audience is wondering if he knows he’s supposed to be an impartial judge, not just a performer in his own soap opera.
