Oprah Winfrey, celebrated queen of daytime television and staunch Democratic defender, has made a clean break with former friend Donald Trump, a snippet of news that will surprise precisely no one who’s been paying attention. During a recent Democratic National Convention event in Chicago, Winfrey took a sledgehammer to her old ally, showcasing just how far she has strayed from that time when the mere idea of running alongside Trump thrilled her. Apparently, the mansion-sized rift in their friendship can now hold political rallies.
Winfrey’s unexpected appearance came as Hollywood celebrities poured their hearts and wallets into the Kamala Harris campaign, which is about as surprising as a Kardashian endorsing a makeup line. The renowned talk show host didn’t pull any punches, proclaiming that she, and indeed the entire electorate, has moved “beyond ridiculous tweets and lies.” One can only hope that Oprah’s vision of “adult conversation” doesn’t involve her infamous book club selections, which may or may not include tomes on how to avoid reality while sipping a kale smoothie.

The irony of Winfrey’s newfound commitment to “decency and respect” in leadership is hard to ignore. Not long ago, she was wishing aloud for a chance to share the White House stage with Trump, excitement dripping from her words like a poorly timed laugh track. Back in 2000, she expressed a desire to lead the country with him, claiming they’d make a fantastic team. Fast forward two decades and the only thing they seem to be sharing now is a mutual distaste, all while making sure to remind the world what a difference two decades can make, especially when one side flips the political script.
Onstage, Winfrey compared political urgency to an emergency rescue: “When a house is on fire, we don’t care about race or religion; we just try to save everyone.” It’s a vivid metaphor—except that a more accurate analogy might involve a dumpster fire that the left continues to stoke while pretending it’s an artisanal bonfire. Oprah’s appeal to “values and character” comes just as the Democrats seem more interested in any kind of character at all, regardless of whether they’re churning out policies that prioritize citizens or pandering to political agendas.
Meanwhile, Trump, who has chosen the high road for now, has redirected his energy toward targeting Kamala Harris’s own dubious record, particularly her use of taxpayer dollars to bail out violent criminals back when she was California’s attorney general. As the GOP gears up for battle, they’re armed with an array of facts about Harris’s past and some unflattering tidbits about Minnesota’s Governor Walz, who appears as if he’s stepped straight out of a sitcom about governmental incompetence. With each new cycle, it seems the left is doing its best to gift the GOP with endless material—so much so that it’s a wonder Trump needs a campaign ad at all.
