Poll Highlights Trump’s Immigration Strengths as Economic Concerns Linger

Polls can be as slippery as a greased pig at a county fair, but they can also provide some insight into what America is thinking. A recent CBS/YouGov poll is stirring the pot yet again, showing both triumphs and turbulence for President Trump. As always, it’s best to approach these numbers with a healthy dose of skepticism, particularly when the pollsters come from a network with a reputation for leaning left.

Despite some mixed reviews about his economic policies, it’s clear that when it comes to immigration, Trump still reigns supreme among his supporters. In fact, a solid 53 percent of those surveyed give a nod to the immigration policies of the Trump administration. That’s right; more than half of respondents are on board with the idea that securing the border and deportations are as essential as making the economy roar back to life. It seems that for many Americans, keeping the country secure takes precedence over wallet concerns.

As for the economic segment of the survey, the terrain feels a bit rockier. While Trump initially swept into office with promises of financial prosperity for all, only about a quarter of respondents now feel his policies are lightening their financial load. Almost 42 percent report feeling worse off, which means that nearly half of the respondents are looking at their wallets rather unfavorably. But wait, let’s not forget the silver lining—when combined with the numbers claiming their situation is unchanged, it reveals a more complex picture. A significant fraction of Americans is still holding on to hope or at least equilibrium, even if their wallets aren’t bursting at the seams.

Worries about inflation still stalk the nation like an unwelcome relative at Thanksgiving. While President Biden bears the brunt of the blame, a surprising 38 percent point fingers at his administration for rising prices. Trump isn’t entirely blameless, of course, and some of that blame is directed his way, but it appears the left’s policies are the standout villains in this drama. The gravity of such economic concerns definitely plays into people’s approval ratings of the president—though immigration policies continue to fuel the flames of approval from the Republican base.

Approval ratings can sometimes sound like they flip a coin, resting at a neutral 50-50 for Trump. The Democrats, on the other hand, are sweating bullets, with approval ratings lower than a snake’s belly. The civic landscape has shifted drastically, and it’s leaving many on the left gnashing their teeth. Commentary from various pundits suggests they’re unsettled by Trump’s polling performance—proving that rattling the left is still a beloved American pastime.

Amidst all this electoral chatter, it’s worth taking a step back to remember that Trump is still in the early days of his presidency, and the midterm elections are just around the corner. It’s classic political strategy to push through tough policies that may yield results later on, much like Ronald Reagan did during his tenure. There’s no doubt that Trump has shifted the tides on illegal immigration substantially without the need for new legislation—just by being firmly committed to a vision of a secure America.
