Looks like the Democrats are in a pickle. The recent CNN poll served up a reality check: a jaw-dropping 75% of registered voters think the Democrats would be better off running anyone other than President Biden against former President Donald Trump. It appears the magic from their basement campaign of 2020 has worn off, much like the batteries in Biden’s teleprompter.
Digging deeper into Democratic circles, it isn’t just the general populace having doubts. Even among the Democratic faithful, a hefty 56% are yearning for a new candidate, while only 43% are willing to stick with Biden. The Biden camp, however, is stubbornly clinging to the idea that another four years of grandpa gaffes will somehow enchant the voters.

What makes it even juicier is the hypothetical matchups. You’d think the Democratic bench would have a shining star ready to ride in on a white horse. Instead, Biden’s potential replacements are struggling just as much. Kamala Harris, California’s Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg, and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer are all trailing Trump. Kamala, supposed to be the heir apparent, is barely neck-and-neck with Trump, falling within the error margin. Watching Buttigieg and Whitmer flounder against Trump with similar margins just underscores the Democrats’ desperation.
The Democratic National Convention is set up to be a laughter fest. Sure, Biden snagged almost all the delegates in the primaries and caucuses. But under party rules, for those delegates to vote freely for someone else on the first ballot, Biden himself would have to graciously step aside. Anyone holding their breath for that moment better be ready to turn blue.
In sum, the Democrats are trapped in a self-made maze with Sleepy Joe at the helm. With Trump gaining favor nationwide and potential Democratic contenders falling short, it seems 2024 is shaping up to be another entertaining election cycle.
