Portland’s Lawlessness: A Wake-Up Call for All American Cities

On Thursday’s American Agenda, former DHS advisor Charles Marino and former Rep. Anthony D’Esposito pulled back the curtain on the kind of lawlessness Portland’s liberal leadership has allowed to fester — violent anti-ICE protests that routinely target federal facilities and harass federal personnel. They made plain what hardworking Americans already suspect: when local elected officials refuse to enforce the law, chaos breeds, and conservative voices who show up to report or hold the line become targets themselves.

Video from the scene and local reporting show protesters descending on the ICE field office in South Portland, where federal officers used tear gas and less-lethal munitions after demonstrators pushed past barricades and tried to force entry. These are not peaceful neighborhood rallies; they are confrontations that endanger civilians, officers, and the basic functions of government. The pictures of makeshift barricades and angry mobs should disturb every citizen who believes in public order.

Meanwhile, the Biden-aligned political class continues to signal that their priority is appeasement, not accountability — a stance that’s interpreted on the streets as permission. The White House press operation and some Democratic mayors have bent over backward to excuse or minimize the destruction when it serves their political narrative, even as federal facilities and employees are threatened. That is why voices like Leavitt’s and conservative lawmakers are rightly demanding that the federal government stop treating these aggressors with kid gloves.

President Trump’s administration has been forced to respond, ordering surges of federal law enforcement and reviewing funding streams for cities that allow anarchic conditions to fester. When local officials will not protect federal property or personnel, the federal government has both the authority and the duty to step in and restore order — and to hold accountable any official or city that tolerates mob rule. Americans who pay taxes deserve protection; they do not deserve to have federal resources sabotaged by political theater.

Even some former DHS officials warn that heavy-handed, uncoordinated federal deployments can backfire if not handled with proper strategy and local cooperation, and those cautions deserve attention rather than dismissal. That reality does not absolve city leaders of blame; it only reinforces the point that we need competent, principled law enforcement working with federal partners to end the violence. Conservatives who love the Constitution want rule of law, not stunts that create more danger for officers and citizens alike.

The truth is simple: when Democrats court or protect violent groups and excuse criminal behavior for political cover, they abandon the very communities they claim to serve. Portland’s suffering is a warning shot to every American city that tolerates rioters and demonizes police while coddling extremists. Voters must remember which party stands for secure streets, accountable officials, and a government that protects its people.

If America is to remain a free and orderly nation, we cannot allow partisan sympathies to shield thugs from consequences. It’s time for patriots to demand real enforcement, real accountability, and leaders who put citizens ahead of radical ideology. The choice could not be clearer: restoration of law and order, or continued decline under permissive progressive rule.
