Portland’s Neon Protests: When Activism Turns into Absurd Theater

Watching self-styled “resistance” activists stage an 80s-themed aerobics class in front of an ICE facility while clashes erupted elsewhere was surreal even by Portland’s recent standards — a performative circus meant to get a laugh, headlines and Instagram likes while serious work of law enforcement goes undone. The Portland Mercury captured the neon leotards and cheesy choreography that these activists proudly call protest, underscoring how far the left’s theatrics have drifted from any coherent policy argument.

Meanwhile in the Chicago suburbs, what started as protests at the Broadview ICE processing center escalated into confrontations that forced law enforcement to make arrests and clear blocked roadways, with multiple people taken into custody amid claims of assaults on federal officers. Reuters reported roughly two dozen arrested as faith leaders and other demonstrators defied designated protest zones, a real-world clash that is no place for a dance-off or a social media stunt.

Federal officers and local police have repeatedly had to deploy crowd-control measures — pepper balls, tear gas and arrests — because demonstrators moved beyond peaceful protest into active obstruction and, according to officials, assaults on personnel and vehicles. Fox News’ coverage from the scene showed agents forced to react as protesters boxed in vehicles and blocked federal operations, with several charged with aggravated battery and other offenses in recent weeks; this isn’t abstract theory, it’s disorder that threatens communities and the rule of law.

Americans who pay their taxes and play by the rules are tired of watching elites and activists turn chaos into a performance piece while our officers put themselves in harm’s way to hold the line. If Democrats in city halls and the media champion these stunts as “community organizing,” they are enabling lawlessness and humiliating the very institutions that keep neighborhoods safe. It’s time for leaders to stop applauding virtue signaling and start defending law and order — and for the rest of us to stand with the men and women who actually do the dangerous, thankless work of protecting our country.
