A thousand protesters descended upon a peaceful neighborhood in New York, ostensibly to demand the release of a mother and her three children detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The protest was organized by the Jefferson County Democratic Committee, with New York Attorney General Letitia James lending her support as she proclaimed her “heartbreak” over the detention, which took place during a search related to an entirely different criminal investigation. One has to wonder if her sentiments extend to the actual victims of child exploitation that law enforcement was working to uncover.
The arrested family had been found during a search warrant execution at a dairy farm, aimed at a child pornography operation. While some types of public outcry can be justified, this just sounds like misplaced indignation from a group more concerned about the legal status of a family than the safety of children themselves. Those protesting might want to consider that the arrest wasn’t a random act of malice but rather an essential part of a serious investigation.
Among the crowd were educators who expressed their dismay over the children missing school. Perhaps they need to redefine priorities because a little kidding around about a “traumatized” classroom pales in comparison to addressing the reality of child exploitation. While some may act as though the children’s return to class is their primary concern, it seems their real focus is simply trying to rally public support against ICE actions, painting them as the villains rather than recognizing the threats faced by vulnerable children.
This is borderline insurrection. At a minimum it is a violation of his civil rights.

It’s worth noting that Tom Homan, the border czar in question, has received backlash for doing his job diligently. He clarified that the operation was not a “raid” but a search related to allegations of illicit activity. His assertion that the agency follows protocol raises eyebrows amid the outcry. Homan further reiterated that once there is no more interest in the family as part of the investigation, decisions would be made regarding their release. This would appear to be a straightforward approach to dealing with law enforcement, yet in an age of emotional rhetoric, logic takes a back seat.
Reports indicated that the family was moved to Karnes County Immigration Processing Center in Texas following their detention. It’s comical that amid cries for compassion, some continue to ignore the implications of illegal immigration and the ramifications of a system meant to protect American citizens. Those protesting might want to think about the bigger picture, but for now, they’re content to engage in a good old-fashioned sing-along in front of Homan’s residence without considering the actual mission he’s involved with.
As protests unfold, Homan has kept his cool, suggesting that he won’t be intimidated by rallies that seem to serve more as a platform for political grandstanding than as an actual solution to the issues at hand. Law enforcement is intended to protect the innocent, and ICE is merely a tool used to combat criminal enterprises, even if those attempts are sometimes met with misguided resistance.
