A young Ukrainian who was abducted during the Russian invasion has now come forward to recount the terror of being held in captivity — forced into so-called “filtration” camps, stripped of her name, and told to profess love for a country that stole her childhood. Her testimony is heartbreaking but not unique; survivors describe bullying, propaganda and routine efforts to erase Ukrainian identity.
The scope of this atrocity is staggering: Ukrainian authorities have documented tens of thousands of cases of children taken from occupied territories, and independent researchers warn the real number may be far higher. Estimates range from roughly 19,500 officially recorded deportations to humanitarian-research tallies that place the figure in the many tens of thousands, underscoring a crisis of enormous scale.
Reports from returned youngsters describe a systematic campaign of “russification” — new names, new papers, and specialized boarding schools where Ukrainian history and language are erased. These are not the actions of a neighbor protecting kids from harm; they are deliberate, state-directed measures to suffocate a people’s identity.
The international community has not ignored these crimes: investigators have characterized the forced deportations as war crimes, and legal actions and warrants have been issued against senior Russian officials implicated in the scheme. Accountability must follow testimony and documentation, not empty speeches and photo ops.
Worryingly, efforts to track and document the missing — essential work that helps reunite children with their families and builds cases for justice — have been hobbled by cuts and shifting priorities that experts say will only aid Moscow’s cover-up. If Western funding and investigative muscle falter now, the chances of bringing these kids home and of holding perpetrators to account will shrink dramatically.
Americans who care about freedom should be outraged, not complacent; this is an assault on the basic rights of children and on the moral order that binds free nations together. Our leaders in Washington must stop treating Ukraine as a political football and instead back concrete measures — intelligence support, legal pressure, and unwavering aid — to pry these children out of Kremlin control and deliver justice to those responsible.
We owe those kidnapped boys and girls more than sorrow; we owe them action. Patriots who value family and faith must demand that Congress and the administration treat these abductions as the moral and security emergency they are, and refuse to let a regime that traffics in stolen childhoods get away with it.
