A new Gallup survey conducted Dec. 1–15 shows Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sitting at the very bottom of the popularity heap — just 28 percent approval among Americans, the lowest of 13 major national figures tested. No one should be surprised that voters punished the man who spent the year attacking conservatives while delivering little for his own party.
The damage is not just among Republicans; Schumer’s standing with Democrats has cratered. Gallup reports his support among his own party plunged from 76 percent in January 2024 to only 39 percent now, a brutal repudiation from the base that ought to worry party bosses.
Conservatives have been saying for months that Democratic leadership has lost touch with working Americans, and Schumer’s approval numbers make that case in black and white. His handling of the prolonged shutdown and the theater of failed negotiations left rank-and-file voters angry and rightly skeptical that the party is competent to govern.
Even prominent commentators on the right noted what should be obvious to Democrats: the midterm messaging playbook is broken. Fox News contributor Bill McGurn and others argued this week that the party’s talking points — wrapped in elitist scolding and Washington slogans — don’t land with people worried about bills, jobs and the safety of their streets.
The poll’s full picture is damning for the political class: only a couple of officials cracked 40 percent, while bureaucrats and showmen outpolled the Senate leader. That reality should humiliate anyone who still believes name-calling and spectacle substitute for delivering results on inflation, energy and public safety.
For patriotic conservatives this is more than schadenfreude — it’s evidence that the Democrats’ instincts are misaligned with the country. Pundits and activists on the right have been calling for Democrats to get real, and voices across the conservative media landscape are asking why Schumer hasn’t been held accountable for the mess his caucus finds itself in.
Now is the time for the GOP to sharpen its message and for hardworking Americans to demand leaders who put results over rhetoric. If Republicans present a clear plan to restore affordability, secure the border and revive opportunity, this poll should serve as a warning shot to Democrats that the voters are already moving on.
