Senator Tammy Duckworth’s public broadside against the Trump administration’s recent use of ICE and federal personnel in Chicago was predictable political theater, not a sober critique of public safety. On CBS’s Face the Nation she accused the administration of lying about operations and portrayed federal agents as aggressors, a narrative Democrats are using to delegitimize efforts to restore order.
What the nation needs is clarity, not hyperbole, after reports that federal agents and National Guard troops were deployed to protect federal property amid escalating violence and a chaotic scene in which a civilian was reportedly shot. Local and national authorities have been at odds over how to characterize the situation, and activists immediately weaponized any discomfort to tar law enforcement instead of holding criminals accountable.
Duckworth even claimed officials “fled the base” when Democrats sought answers about the operation, an accusation that plays straight into the Left’s playbook of attacking federal prerogatives rather than confronting the criminality that spawned the deployment. Her theatrics during the visit to Naval Station Great Lakes exposed the same tired reflex: blame the administration and absolve local leaders who cultivate sanctuary policies that invite lawlessness.
Conservatives who believe in law and order should be wary of Democrats who rush to defend those who undermine it. The federal government has a duty to secure federal facilities and enforce immigration laws when local officials refuse to do so, and political grandstanding from senators does nothing to protect ordinary Americans worried about rising crime. Responsible governance means backing agents on the ground who put their lives on the line to keep our streets and institutions safe.
Hardworking Americans deserve leaders who will fight to restore safety and enforce the rule of law instead of scoring partisan points on the backs of federal officers. If Democrats continue to prioritize politics over protection, the country will pay the price in emboldened criminals and terrorized neighborhoods. It’s time for commonsense, patriotic Americans to stand with law enforcement and the administration when they take necessary action to secure our communities.
