Thousands of Israelis took to the streets Sunday in a nationwide strike demanding their government make a deal with Hamas terrorists. The protesters blocked major highways and forced businesses to close across the country. They want Prime Minister Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire that would free the remaining hostages held in Gaza.
This kind of protest only helps Hamas and hurts Israel’s bargaining power. When terrorists see a divided nation, they think they can wait out the pressure and get better terms. These well-meaning Israelis are actually making it harder to bring their loved ones home safely.
Hamas took these innocent people hostage 22 months ago during their brutal terror attack on Israel. About 50 hostages remain trapped in Gaza’s tunnels, with only 20 believed to still be alive. These are not prisoners of war but victims of kidnapping by ruthless terrorists who use human shields.
Israeli police had to use water cannons and arrest dozens of protesters who tried to break into major highways. The demonstrators lit bonfires on roads and created dangerous situations for everyone. Law and order must be maintained even when emotions run high.
Hamas released new videos of hostages recently to pressure Israel and inflame public opinion. This is exactly what terrorists do – they exploit human suffering for political gain. Every concession to Hamas only encourages more kidnapping and terror attacks in the future.
Israel cannot negotiate from a position of weakness or desperation. Making deals with terrorists teaches them that taking hostages works and pays off. The best way to free hostages is to defeat Hamas completely, not reward their evil behavior.
Israel has every right to defend itself against terrorism and eliminate the threat Hamas poses. The Jewish state has tried diplomacy and ceasefires before, only to see Hamas rearm and attack again. Sometimes the only way to achieve lasting peace is through decisive military victory.
America should stand firmly with Israel in this fight against terrorism. Our ally faces the same radical Islamic enemies that threaten the free world everywhere. Israel’s security is America’s security, and we must never pressure them to surrender to terrorists.
