A Texas sheriff is celebrating the accomplishments of Operation Lone Star, a crucial border security mission that has been operating for three years. The mission has been dedicated to combating the criminal activities of cartels, and Sheriff Kelly R. Janica of Jackson County has been a key player in its success. The mission, led by Sheriff Roy Boyd of Goliad, involves law enforcement agencies from nearly 20 counties and approximately 30 agencies.
Sheriff Janica emphasized the dangerous work and successful achievements of his deputies in a video aimed at informing county residents about the task force’s efforts. He highlighted their role in thwarting cartel-related criminal activities, engaging in high-speed car chases, and halting smuggling operations. The sheriff also stressed their commitment to preventing cartels from utilizing their counties for criminal activities, ultimately ensuring the safety of Texans.

The OLS task force, which includes members from Jackson and Wharton counties, has been described as the “linebackers” and the last line of defense against cartel-linked smugglers. Their focus has been on intercepting traffickers of people, weapons, drugs, and money using stolen vehicles along specific highways. Sheriff Janica’s deputies have successfully recovered over 100 stolen vehicles in the first year alone.
One significant incident involved finding a truck carrying approximately 70 to 80 people, preventing a potential tragedy due to dehydration and exhaustion. They also apprehended individuals suspected of entering the country illegally and being smuggled to North Carolina, illustrating the severity of the situation. The sheriff expressed frustration with the federal government’s involvement in what he referred to as “legalized smuggling,” criticizing the Biden administration for its policies.
Sheriff Janica commended Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas legislature for allocating resources and funds, allowing them to effectively combat criminal activities. Despite the challenges, the sheriff remains optimistic about the future and the continued efforts to uphold the safety and security of Texas.
As Sheriff Janica prepares to retire, Edna Police Chief Rick Boone is set to continue the county’s involvement in the OLS task force. He aims to uphold the mission’s objectives and ensure that the fight against cartel-related crime remains a top priority. Numerous Texas sheriffs, including Janica, Boyd, and Srubar, have voiced their support for OLS, emphasizing the urgent need to address the security risks posed by an unsecure border.
