A devastating tragedy struck Codorus Township in York County, Pennsylvania, as three police detectives were killed and two other officers critically wounded during a violent encounter while serving an arrest warrant. Officers from the Northern York County Regional Police Department responded to a call involving a suspected stalker, 24-year-old Matthew Ruth, at a farm residence. What began as a routine warrant service escalated into a brutal ambush when Ruth opened fire with an AR-15–style rifle as officers entered the home, resulting in the tragic loss of three dedicated law enforcement professionals and the injury of two others.
The officers who lost their lives—Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser—are remembered for their bravery and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Residents were shocked by the violence, describing a chaotic scene that sounded like a “war zone,” punctuated by dozens of gunshots. The suspect, Ruth, was himself fatally shot by one of the wounded officers, bringing the immediate threat to an end and ensuring no ongoing danger to the community.
