Former President Donald Trump recently voiced his support for former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan in his Senate bid in the Democratic-leaning state. Trump stated that he would like to see Hogan win and believes he has a good chance. The former president emphasized his focus on the party and the country, expressing his endorsement of Hogan during a visit to Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
Hogan’s campaign responded to Trump’s endorsement by affirming that the governor is not supporting Trump, echoing Hogan’s previous decisions not to support Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections. In his bid for the Senate, Hogan is running against Democratic candidate Angela Alsobrooks in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Benjamin Cardin. If successful, Hogan would become Maryland’s first Republican senator since Charles “Mac” Mathias retired in 1987.

Trump’s endorsement of Hogan diverges from the views of his co-campaign manager, Chris LaCivita, and Republican National Committee co-chair, Lara Trump. While LaCivita responded with a message suggesting the end of Hogan’s campaign, Lara Trump criticized the former governor, stating that he did not deserve the respect of Republicans and labeling his remarks as “ridiculous.”
Hogan has previously expressed his intention not to vote for either Trump or President Biden, asserting that he does not believe either of them should hold the presidency. He also suggested that a Trump loss in the election would mark the end of the movement and prompt efforts to steer the Republican Party back toward a more inclusive, Reagan-era approach.
