For nearly half a century, a steady eyesore plagued the prestigious grounds of Lafayette Park, staring straight into the heart of American leadership at the White House. Dubbed the White House Peace Vigil, this so-called protest camp was hailed by left-wing activists as a beacon for peace. But lo and behold, President Donald Trump just ordered its long-overdue dismantling, igniting outrage among liberal circles. Where they see a “vigil,” the rest of us see a dilapidated nuisance cluttering our nation’s capital.
This so-called peace camp championed nuclear disarmament for decades, starting in 1981. Yet, the site devolved into what right-minded Americans clearly recognize as just another mess of signs and slogans without real action. Understandably, some drum-beating activists, accustomed to their self-appointed throne of endless grievance, now cry foul at this righteous move by Trump. They plan to challenge the closure in court, as if the Constitution somehow grants the right to monopolize public spaces indefinitely. Only in the topsy-turvy world of liberal politics does such logic hold muster.

Van Drew, a Republican voice of reason, rightly argued that the Constitution doesn’t permit permanent camps on public land. The so-called vigil compromised public safety, sullied an iconic park, and burdened Washington, D.C., taxpayers. Yet, the liberal elite think these protestors deserve special treatment, beyond the law that binds the rest of us. Is this not the very definition of hypocrisy?
Trump’s decisive order this past Sunday signaled a clear message: public health, safety, and law should reign supreme over pseudo-political demonstrations. The White House stated this “vigil” was more hazard than helper to visitors and locals alike. Stripping away the facade of peace, it exposes a shrine serving the double standards of the liberal agenda.
In breaking up this 44-year-old farce, Trump has reminded us all that laws matter. Public spaces should reflect pride and unity, not partisan clutter. Is it really a shock that once removed from their taxpayer-subsidized perch, the usual suspects of grievance politics howl in protest yet again? Indeed, the real “mockery” is not the end of this vigil but the tolerant ignorance it had enjoyed for far too long. When will liberals learn to separate genuine advocacy from public spectacle?
