The newly minted Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is quickly proving just how serious the Trump administration is about overhauling federal spending. In less than two weeks since their inception, they have already scrapped over a billion dollars in wasteful “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion” (DEI) contracts. With the sheer pace at which the DOGE is moving, one might think they’ve launched a new kind of government efficiency boot camp, led by none other than Elon Musk.
Cancelling a billion dollars’ worth of contracts in such a short time frame is no small feat. The DOGE has certainly made a dramatic entrance, showcasing its commitment to fiscal responsibility. However, while billion-dollar cuts are impressive, they merely scratch the surface of what needs to be done. It’s easy to snip away at the fringes when there are countless layers of government spending that are ripe for the chopping block. Hog-tying the budget with a few cuts in DEI initiatives won’t fix the overarching issue of out-of-control federal expenditures.
The cancellation of these contracts may be a commendable start, but the real heavy lifting lies ahead. Federal spending has become a runaway train, and scaling back contracts is akin to throwing a pebble at it while expecting it to stop. To truly reign in the budget, DOGE must wield a heavier tool than a mere scalpel. The ideal methodology would involve a systematic dismantling of entire agencies that have strayed so far from their intended purposes. Why not put a chainsaw to the likes of the Department of Energy or the Department of Education, whose existence often leads to bloated bureaucracies and inefficiency?
The constitutional constraints on federal government spending ought to be the guiding principles here. If it doesn’t fall within the framework of the Constitution, then it should be left to the states or the people. It’s a straightforward concept that many politicians seem to overlook in their quest for power. Closing down unnecessary federal agencies and allowing states to reclaim their autonomy could result in trillions saved rather than mere billions.

While DOGE’s actions signal a refreshing departure from the norm, it is imperative that this momentum does not falter. We’ve seen a glimmer of hope, but that needs to transition into a robust campaign for further cuts. The mountains of waste in Washington are extensive and deep-rooted, and unless there’s a determined effort to excavate that waste, the current actions will become little more than a footnote in the long saga of government inefficiency.
The conservative base has long called for a government that adheres to constitutional limits and operates efficiently. Initiatives like those of the DOGE, if pursued relentlessly, could fulfill these demands, revealing a pathway toward a more fiscally responsible administration. The only question that remains is whether the DOGE will continue to wield its newfound power effectively, ensuring that every dollar spent is a dollar that truly serves the American people rather than a cause of waste and inefficiency.
