In a stunning turn of events, the prayers and hopes of Americans resulted in a significant victory for President-elect Donald Trump, who managed to obliterate expectations and outperform his 2016 numbers. As if defying all odds, Trump’s resurgence came with a notable appeal among demographics that the Democrats assumed were safely in their camp, thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris’s supposed charm offensive. Apparently, many voters felt more aligned with Trump’s message than with Harris’s brand of politics.
One of the more shocking revelations from this election cycle is Trump’s surge among black voters and, more crucially, the Catholic demographic. The Trump train rolled straight through the pews, capturing 56% of the Catholic vote, leaving Harris and her team scratching their heads in disbelief. This is a massive swing from the five-point lead Trump had in 2020, showing he managed to pull off a staggering ten-point turnaround. Harris’s anti-Christian sentiments and her blunders concerning the faith community clearly didn’t leave the kind of impression her supporters were hoping for.

Exit polls from the Washington Post revealed that key swing states delivered resounding victories for Trump, with margins reaching up to 15 points in certain areas. States like Pennsylvania and Michigan experienced a Catholic vote landslide, with Trump winning by 14 and 20 points respectively. Florida was no different, as Trump claimed a 29-point advantage. Clearly, those rosaries must have been doing some heavy lifting in the weeks leading up to the election.
Harris’s views on abortion likely played a prominent role in her inability to connect with Catholic voters. Her continuous mocking of religious beliefs, coupled with a lack of respect for traditional values, didn’t win her many fans. Ignoring significant religious events, like the AI Smith dinner—which raises money for Catholic charities—only added to the perception that she was out of touch with one of America’s key voting blocs. When the majority of voters supporting abortion bans aligned themselves with Trump, it painted a grim picture for Harris’s campaign.

Their inability to connect with this crucial group led CatholicVote.org’s president to label Trump’s victory as “shocking.” With promises to address inflation and border chaos, Trump clearly presented himself as a more palatable choice for voters seeking practical solutions rather than empty rhetoric. His connection to the Christian community and his recognition of their values starkly contrasted with Harris’s open disregard, sealing her fate in a race that has now reshaped expectations for future elections.
