Ukraine Aid Well Runs Dry as White House Fumbles

The White House made clear on Thursday that when it comes to helping Ukraine, the U.S. might be fresh out of options. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby sounded the alarm, warning that the well of security assistance for Ukraine is running dry, with a few more weeks left until it’s bone dry. This could spell big trouble for Ukraine’s efforts to fend off Russian invaders.

President Biden is seeking a hefty $106 billion from Congress for national security needs, including aid for Ukraine and Israel. However, the U.S. has already doled out a whopping $111 billion to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. That’s a whole lot of cash.

But hold your horses, folks! The Republicans on Capitol Hill are raising some serious eyebrows over the truckloads of money the U.S. keeps sending overseas. They want to see some major changes to U.S. border policy before they even think about green-lighting this massive spending spree. Senate Republicans put the brakes on Mr. Biden’s request, saying “not so fast” until their demands are met.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky didn’t mince words, calling it “profoundly unserious” to ignore the need for securing our nation’s borders. You tell ’em, Mitch!

Meanwhile, the White House is catching heat for trying to tie foreign aid to border policies. Mr. Kirby swatted away any notion that this was a blunder, claiming there’s bipartisan support for the aid and blaming a “small number of Republicans” for holding it hostage. Old Kirby insists that they’re willing to bargain in good faith, but c’mon, who’s really playing hardball here?

The clock’s ticking, and Ukraine’s in a bind. Will the U.S. come through, or is this the end of the line for Ukraine’s security aid? You be the judge.
