A young Ukrainian woman who escaped war and death in her homeland was brutally murdered on a Charlotte train last month. Iryna Zarutska, just 23 years old, came to America seeking safety from Russian bombs only to be stabbed to death by a career criminal. This is not the America we promised refugees who flee real persecution.
The killer, Carlos Brown, was riding the train without paying like so many criminals do every day. He had been arrested multiple times before for robbery, breaking and entering, and assault. Yet somehow this dangerous man was walking free to terrorize innocent people on public transportation.
Surveillance video shows Brown sitting right behind Zarutska before pulling out a knife and stabbing her three times in the neck. The attack lasted just minutes while other passengers watched in horror. Brown calmly walked away, wrapped his bloody hands in a sweater, and stepped off the train like nothing happened.
Here is the real tragedy beyond this senseless murder. Other passengers on that train car did nothing to help this innocent young woman as she was being killed. They sat frozen while a monster took her life right in front of them. This is what happens when we raise a generation to be passive victims instead of brave Americans.
The police were on the same train but in a different car. Transit officials say they followed proper protocol by holding the train until help arrived. But protocols don’t save lives when seconds matter and evil strikes without warning.
This murder exposes the complete failure of our justice system. Repeat offenders like Brown should be locked up, not roaming free to prey on hardworking people trying to get to work. Soft-on-crime policies and revolving door courts put decent Americans at risk every single day.
Charlotte officials are now scrambling to increase security and review policies after an innocent woman paid the ultimate price. They want more fare inspections and security staff, but they should have protected passengers before tragedy struck. Too little, too late for Zarutska and her grieving family.
This Ukrainian refugee survived Putin’s war only to die from American crime and cowardice. She deserved better from the country that promised her safety. Every law-abiding citizen deserves better than a system that protects criminals more than victims.
