A beautiful young Ukrainian woman came to America seeking safety from war. Instead, she found death on a Charlotte train at the hands of a career criminal who should have been locked up. Iryna Zarutska was just 23 years old when she was brutally stabbed to death on August 22nd. She fled Ukraine to escape violence, only to be murdered by the very system that failed to protect her.
The killer was Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old man with a rap sheet longer than your arm. He had 14 prior criminal cases and spent five years in prison for armed robbery. This monster had a history of mental illness and violent behavior that officials knew about. Yet somehow, he was walking free on our streets.
Zarutska was riding home from her job at a pizzeria, still wearing her work uniform. She sat down in front of Brown on the light rail train, having no idea she was next to a predator. Four minutes later, he pulled out a knife and stabbed her three times in cold blood. There was no argument, no interaction, just pure evil in action.
This tragedy was completely preventable if our broken justice system actually worked. Judges and parole boards who keep releasing dangerous criminals back onto our streets have blood on their hands. When will we start holding these officials accountable for their reckless decisions that put innocent lives at risk.
President Trump has rightfully called attention to this case that the mainstream media tried to ignore. He understands that public safety should be the top priority, not coddling criminals and making excuses for violent predators. We need leaders who will crack down on crime and protect law-abiding citizens.
Charlotte officials are now scrambling to add more security after the fact. They are deploying more officers and adding bike patrols like this will somehow fix their years of failed policies. It is too little, too late for Iryna and her grieving family back in war-torn Ukraine.
This young woman survived bombs and bullets in her homeland only to die on American public transportation. She came here believing in the American dream and trusting our system to keep her safe. Instead, our revolving door justice system betrayed her in the worst possible way.
We must demand real change from prosecutors, judges, and parole boards who treat violent crime like a joke. Career criminals like Brown should never see the light of day again after their first serious offense. Enough is enough with this soft-on-crime madness that is destroying our communities and killing innocent people.
