In California, a troubling situation has developed that highlights the ongoing struggles faced by veterans in need of care. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Doug Collins, is calling out the local leaders of California over an incident involving a clinic that serves veterans. This clinic, which provides crucial services like cancer care, suicide prevention, pain management, and treatment for traumatic brain injuries, found itself temporarily shut down due to disturbances from rioters. Over 1,800 appointments for veterans were canceled, leaving many without essential services at a time when they need them most.
Collins has pointed fingers at prominent figures such as Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. He argues that these leaders have allowed chaos to reign in the city while veterans are left to suffer the consequences. The clinic in question is an ambulatory facility, meaning that veterans can walk in and receive care on-site. By letting rioters disrupt the operations, local authorities have turned a blind eye to the needs of those who have served the nation.
The situation is particularly dire for many veterans who live in Los Angeles, where homelessness among veterans is a serious issue. Lots of them rely on local clinics for basic care, which is now compromised due to the city’s failure to maintain order. Collins voiced frustration at the lack of discussion around how local leadership’s inaction ultimately impacts those just trying to manage their health and well-being. Collins emphasized that the Department of Veterans Affairs has lost its original focus. He called for clarity in purpose – a return to serving veterans as the priority. For Collins and others in the organization, the mission is straightforward: ensure veterans receive the care they need as quickly as possible. Recent efforts have shown a decrease in backlogs, noticeably improving wait times and streamlining access to treatment for conditions like PTSD. But these positive changes are at risk if local authorities do not address the disruptions that prevent veterans from receiving vital healthcare.
