Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer made her third trip to the White House this year to meet with President Trump. The August 5th meeting has Republicans questioning why Whitmer keeps running to Washington instead of fixing problems at home. Rep. Lisa McClain called the whole situation “kind of sad” and she’s absolutely right.
Whitmer spent the meeting begging Trump for help with Michigan’s Medicaid mess. She wants a three-year delay on federal changes that could cost Michigan hundreds of millions of dollars. This is what happens when Democrats mismanage state programs and then expect taxpayers to bail them out.
The governor also complained about Trump’s tariffs hurting Michigan’s auto industry. But these tariffs protect American workers from unfair foreign competition. Whitmer should be thanking Trump for putting America first instead of whining about policies that help our own people.
Whitmer’s office says she discussed recovery efforts from ice storms that hit northern Michigan earlier this year. Where was all this concern when she was locking down the state during COVID? Now she suddenly cares about helping regular folks who got hit by natural disasters.
The Democratic governor also pushed Trump to help fill an empty manufacturing site in Genesee County. A semiconductor company backed out of building a massive chip factory there. Maybe if Michigan had better business-friendly policies, companies wouldn’t keep leaving the state.
This is Whitmer’s third White House visit since Trump took office just months ago. She’s clearly desperate to stay relevant and grab headlines. Real leaders solve problems in their own states instead of constantly flying to D.C. for photo ops.
Whitmer claims she has no problem working with Trump despite their past fights. But everyone knows this is all about her political future. She’s positioning herself as someone who can work across the aisle while her fellow Democrats attack Trump every single day.
Michigan voters deserve better than a governor who spends more time in Washington than in Lansing. Whitmer should focus on fixing Michigan’s real problems instead of playing political games at the White House.
