Speculation has been running rampant regarding who is actually in charge of the White House these days. With observable signs of President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline becoming harder to ignore, the first lady, Jill Biden, has seized the spotlight in a rather unusual way. It appears she may be stepping up to lead the country more than her husband, and if the recent Cabinet meeting is any indication, the notion that she’s the one running the show isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds.
Just this past Friday, Jill Biden led a Cabinet meeting, the first one in nearly a year, and the spectacle was almost dizzying. Instead of Joe Biden, whose last-minute vaccation habits and listening skills seem to rival those of a cat vying for a sunbeam, it was Jill who’s currently handling the family’s political business. One has to wonder if Biden is just a cheerful figurehead these days, while his wife takes on the more serious responsibilities. After all, gathering the Cabinet isn’t exactly an everyday occurrence for this administration. They have not convened since last October, raising eyebrows over the glaring lack of urgency despite the numerous crises brewing both at home and abroad.

During this exciting meeting, Biden kicked things off with a plea to Congress for a short-term funding bill. Surprise, surprise—a standard request, akin to asking for more ketchup at a barbecue. Then, with what could only be described as questionable bravado, he declared he would be “running through the tape” in his remaining months, as if the only thing running might be his vacation plans. Since stepping back from his re-election bid in July, he has been enjoying what can only be described as an extended summer holiday, giving new meaning to the term “lame-duck president.”
The president quickly handed over the reins of the meeting to Jill with an almost childlike gusto, saying, “It’s all yours, kid.” What followed was truly something to behold. Jill took charge, elaborating on various initiatives aimed at boosting women’s health funding and encouraging all agencies to step up their game. With a commanding presence, she compared favorably against her husband, who looked more like a confused bystander than the nation’s leader trying to steer the ship through stormy waters.
The first lady’s newfound authority didn’t go unnoticed, especially since her signature graced special notebooks handed to attendees alongside her husband’s—yes, folks, Jill Biden has officially entered the realm of co-presidency, even if unofficially. Not only did she manage to outshine Joe by speaking more than twice as long, the optics of it all painted a picture where she appeared alert and focused, while the president seemed more suited for a cozy nap than a stimulating discussion about national affairs.
After the Cabinet meeting, President Biden departed to Delaware, presumably to engage in some closed-door diplomacy. Meanwhile, Jill remained in Washington, continuing her role as the de facto leader by hosting a tour and celebration for the cast of “The West Wing”, a show that has aged about as well as Biden’s presidency. Making headlines in Georgia, Vice President Kamala Harris was noticeably absent from the Cabinet discussion, busy instead rallying her pro-abortion troops, seemingly unaware that her own administration was fumbling the ball at home and abroad.
Lastly, when President Biden faced questions from reporters regarding the Middle East tensions, he stumbled through his responses with the grace of a deer on ice. Attempting to discuss potential ceasefire deals, he left many baffled. His remarks ranged from vague to completely nonsensical, as he floundered about, making statements about “realism” that could leave anyone scratching their heads. If a ceasefire might not be realistic—but cliché-ridden platitudes definitely were—one might conclude that the only thing Biden was convincing anyone of was that perhaps Jill should start charging him rent for living in her shadow.
