Despite his initial success, Hurd acknowledged that he had not garnered enough support to continue the race. He recognized the importance of consolidating the party around one candidate to defeat both Trump and Biden. Hurd, an outspoken critic of Trump, warned that nominating him or anyone imitating his divisive behavior would result in a loss for the party.
Hurd endorsed Nikki Haley as the best alternative to Trump, praising her understanding of national security and foreign policy complexities. He expressed his full support for Haley and announced his intention to back her for the remainder of the race. Hurd’s endorsement came just months after he launched his campaign, aiming to bring “commonsense leadership” to America and take on Trump. However, he struggled to gain traction in multiple polls.
In response to Hurd’s endorsement, Haley expressed gratitude and emphasized the need for unity in order to make Joe Biden a one-term president. Despite Hurd’s support, President Trump remains the frontrunner for the Republican nomination according to multiple polls.
