These brothers, both U.S. citizens, were arrested on serious charges related to making threats against Tricia McLaughlin, the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The situation escalated when they allegedly threatened to shoot on-site agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and even expressed a desire to hang Ms. McLaughlin on social media. As the kids say, that’s a big no-no.
The legal troubles for these twins don’t stop at mere social media bravado. One of the brothers is facing multiple charges, including conspiracy, making terrorist threats, and unlawful possession of an assault weapon. The other twin isn’t off the hook either, as he is also being charged with conspiracy and making terroristic threats. The arrests came after local SWAT teams discovered firearms in a location just west of Atlantic City. It seems that these brothers didn’t think their words could lead to serious consequences, but the law is not forgiving when it comes to threats.
This incident is part of a disturbing trend. Reports suggest there has been an alarming 8,000% increase in death threats against ICE personnel recently, a number that is enough to raise eyebrows and blood pressure alike. Just this month, there was a man in Los Angeles who was caught trying to target ICE agents with Molotov cocktails. Prior incidents included a series of vehicle ramming attacks aimed at ICE personnel in North Carolina as part of “Operation Charlotte’s Web.” It’s clear that emotions are running high, but turning to violence is never the answer.
In the eyes of the acting ICE director, this spike in threats creates a troubling environment where law enforcement officers are increasingly viewed as the villains instead of the heroes they are.
