Nikole Hannah-Jones’ New York Times Magazine essay — in which the 1619 Project founder admits she now regrets choosing predominantly Black, high-poverty Brooklyn public schools for her daughter — should be a wake-up call for every parent who’s been gaslit by the education establishment. Her daughter Najya’s blunt line, “I never really got the education I wanted,” was a devastating confession that Hannah-Jones echoes in print as she confronts the consequences of her decision.
Fox’s Outnumbered panel, with Kayleigh McEnany leading the charge, rightly tore into the moral hypocrisy of celebrating ideological gestures while children fall behind in basic skills. The show used Hannah-Jones’ painful admission to press the obvious point: good intentions don’t educate a child, competent teachers and high standards do.
What Hannah-Jones’ essay exposes is the ugly trade-off progressives have long asked parents to accept — sacrifice your own child’s future to make a political point about inequality. She even concedes that she “put ideals ahead” of her daughter’s clear educational needs, a startling honesty that conservatives have been saying for years about elite virtue-signaling.
If there’s any silver lining here, it’s the overdue vindication for school choice advocates who’ve argued that parents must be empowered to pick the best setting for their children rather than being told to submit to failing, bureaucratic schools. As education reformers point out, giving families the funding and freedom to choose schools is the clearest pathway to force systemic improvement through competition.
Now is the time for patriotic Americans and principled politicians to stop lecturing parents and start fighting for policies that put kids first: real accountability, transparent testable standards, and education dollars that follow the child. If Democrats truly cared about equal opportunity they’d stop defending the status quo and back real school choice — instead of asking parents to keep suffering in the name of ideology.
