Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, said this week that people who drive electric cars, like herself, don’t care about high gas prices.
Stabenow told the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday that she recently drove from Michigan to Washington, D.C. in her electric car and never once thought about gas prices.
According to Stabenow on gas prices, it took her a long time to get enough chips in this country to buy an electric car. When she did, she drove it from Michigan to the hearing last weekend, and it didn’t matter how high the prices were at the gas stations.
Stabenow also said that she is “looking forward to the chance for us to move to vehicles that won’t be dependent on the whims of the oil companies and the international markets.”
AAA says that on Tuesday, gas prices in the U.S. hit a new high of $4.91 per gallon, which is a 61-cent increase from the week before.
Several other Democrats, like Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have suggested electric vehicles as decent alternatives to high gas prices, even though the average price of an electric vehicle is more than $50,000.
Republicans were very angry with Stabenow and said she was out of touch.
