OANN reports a bill that was driven by Democrats and intended to require states to maintain abortion legality did not clear the Senate. In spite of having been properly elected and sworn in, the senators did not vote in favor of the motion, as stated by the Republican Leader in the Senate Minority, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. There were 49 votes in favor, compared to 51 votes against the proposition.
Following the Women’s Health Protection Act’s passage through the House of Representatives, Senate Democrats were unable to muster the sixty votes necessary to advance the bill. Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, and all 50 Republicans in the Senate voted against it. According to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York), the vote was one of the most significant in the upper chamber since it would codify the Roe v. Wade decision.
The bill was described as “extreme” and “radical.” by McConnell, the leader of the Republicans.
The vote took place one week after a draft of a Supreme Court opinion was made public, suggesting that Roe v. Wade would most probably be overturned as a result of the vote. Since then, protests have broken out all around the country, including in front of the residences of Supreme Court judges…
The abortion laws in each individual state would be up for grabs, according to the proposed opinion. The judgment will be handed down by the Supreme Court somewhere between the end of June and the beginning of July.
