Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York is facing criticism after saying that the roads and bridges in New York City were made with racist intentions. She talked about how urban planner Robert Moses was discriminatory in his planning. Living in places that are made to isolate people can be tough, Ocasio-Cortez said. She mentioned that her neighborhood has some of the longest commutes in New York City, making it hard for people to socialize and do things. AOC feels that decisions like these are meant to disconnect and disempower people, especially minorities and poor individuals. She thinks it can make it difficult for communities to come together and help themselves.
Some people disagreed with AOC, saying that her comments were not helpful and focused too much on politics. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also made comments like these last year, suggesting that minorities are more at risk of dying in accidents because of discrimination. It’s important to talk about road safety and ways to improve it without always bringing up racial issues.
