Perhaps Biden just wanted to ensure that the people who so effectively dedicated their time to investigating their political rivals received some shiny recognition before the tide turns.
In the twilight of Biden’s presidency, the whispers of pardons are growing louder, with both Thompson and Cheney being included in discussions among allies of President-elect Donald Trump. As the new administration gears up, many are wondering if Trump will make good on his veiled threats to bring legal consequences upon those who sought to discredit him. Biden’s glowing remarks about his awardees paint them as patriotic defenders of democracy, though many might find it hard to swallow that these two exemplify all that is noble about American citizenship. Cheney basked in the praise, raking in lengthy applause as her introduction proclaimed her commitment to placing “the American people over party.” This raises eyebrows—especially among conservatives—who remember her relentless assaults on Trump and his supporters, leading to her ultimate fall from grace within the GOP. Some might call this a textbook case of political opportunism dressed up as altruism.
On the other hand, Thompson, honored for his “lifelong dedication” to the Constitution, is similarly viewed skeptically by many. After all, when one spends more time hunting political opponents than actually safeguarding constitutional rights, it’s easy to question the motivations behind such accolades. As Biden presented these honors, it became clear that this gesture was less about patriotism and more about solidifying a political legacy among leftist elites before the pendulum swings back toward conservatism. The irony certainly isn’t lost on anyone as Biden and his cronies celebrate their version of ‘citizenship’ while demonizing others for proudly standing up for their beliefs.
