President Joe Biden’s attorneys are currently locked in negotiations with special counsel Robert Hur over the terms of a potential interview with Biden. Hur is investigating Biden’s handling of classified documents found in his office at the Penn Biden Center and his home in Wilmington. The talks have been ongoing for about a month, but no agreement has been reached thus far.

The discussions between Hur’s office and Biden’s lawyers revolve around various aspects of the potential interview, including the logistics of when, where, and how it will take place, as well as the scope of the questions that will be asked. Biden’s legal team is particularly keen on limiting the scope of the interview to focus solely on his time as vice president, rather than extending beyond that period.
Hur’s investigation has been running for eight months following the discovery of the classified documents in November 2022 and January 2023 at the Penn Biden Center and Biden’s Delaware home, respectively. While most of the documents are believed to relate to Biden’s tenure as vice president under President Obama, some are also said to pertain to his time as a senator. The exact number of documents found in Biden’s possession remains unknown.
Interestingly, Biden is not the only one facing scrutiny over classified documents. Former President Donald Trump recently pled not guilty to charges related to the more than 300 classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence. Trump’s lawyers maintain that all materials were returned to the government. Trump is facing a total of 40 charges, including violations of the Espionage Act. Special counsel Jack Smith is overseeing his case, which also involves charges related to the 2020 election and the Capitol riot on January 6th.
It’s worth noting that documents were also discovered at former Vice President Mike Pence’s home, but he was cleared of any wrongdoing, and a special counsel was never appointed in his case.
Opinion: It’s concerning to see that Biden, just months into his presidency, is already facing investigations into his handling of classified documents. This raises serious questions about his ability to protect our national security interests. Additionally, it’s interesting to see the contrast between how the investigations into Biden and Trump are being handled. While Biden’s team is negotiating the terms of an interview, Trump is facing multiple charges and has even been indicted in a separate investigation. This seems like a clear double standard in the treatment of Republicans and Democrats. It’s important that we hold all politicians accountable for their actions, regardless of their party affiliation.
