President Joe Biden seems to have finally acknowledged the full-blown circus happening at the U.S.-Mexico border with the announcement of stricter asylum claim caps. It took an avalanche of illegal crossings and starling voter disappointment for the Biden administration to blink, but here they are. The new tightening of asylum policies is all about trying to pull off some semblance of border control, even as those crossing the border continue to laugh in the face of what anyone would consider orderly immigration.
This isn’t the first time Biden has attempted to put a leash on the chaos. Back in June, he issued a proclamation, ostensibly to rein in the rampant illegal crossings that have been flooding the southern border—hinting that the couple of thousand daily encounters had become a bit too much even for his administration. The original rules set the stage for a border policy that would only allow entry after the average encounters dipped below 1,500 for a week. Now, nearly five months into this attempt, Biden has decreed that it’s not enough to just plateau; the crossings need to stay below that threshold for a whopping 28 days before anyone gets a reprieve.

Meanwhile, as Biden plays his game of Whack-a-Mole with asylum seekers, the White House has proudly announced a 50% decrease in encounters. Mind you, one has to wonder how much of that is due to policy changes and how much is just the result of border agents being too overwhelmed to even register every illegal entry. Regardless, this faint glimmer of success has allowed the administration to pat itself on the back for a crisis it created in the first place.
Let’s not forget about Kamala Harris, who finally decided to show up to the border, presumably fresh off her latest campaign stop. She boldly proclaimed her commitment to getting tough on those crossing illegally, echoing a sentiment that makes you wonder if she’s been living under a rock. It’s quite rich to hear her declare the need for an orderly system when her compatriots have spent years making absolute chaos the new normal.
Currently, their administration is sitting on data that shows Border Patrol has encountered over seven million migrants unlawfully crossing the border during Biden’s reign. That’s a staggering number that paints the true picture of how much the Biden-Harris team has mismanaged the situation. At this rate, it’s safe to say that the left’s notion of open borders is getting them some very unexpected and unwelcome results. Whether these new measures will actually lead to any real change at the border is anyone’s guess, but they sure make for an amusing political theatre.
