In a stunning turn of events, the Wisconsin Supreme Court has made a decision that has sent shockwaves through the 2024 electoral landscape. Democratic Party challenger Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) will now be included on the presidential primary ballot in Wisconsin. This means that President Joe Biden will no longer have a free pass during the state’s primary contest on April 2. Finally, a glimmer of hope for the Republican Party!
Phillips fought tooth and nail to ensure his presence on the ballot. He filed a lawsuit after being excluded from the process earlier this year. And boy, did he come prepared! Phillips argued that he deserved to be on the ballot because he was “generally advocated or recognized in the national news media.” Well, sorry to burst your bubble, Phillips, but just because you appear on the news doesn’t mean you’re worthy of running for president. Nice try, though!
The state’s Justice Department wasn’t buying what Phillips was selling. They made it clear that the decision of who gets on the ballot is solely up to the elections committee. Way to stand your ground, Justice Department! Phillips may have thought he had a shot, but he clearly underestimated the power of those in charge.
But luckily for Phillips, the Wisconsin Supreme Court saw things differently. They realized that the committee had made a huge mistake by excluding him. Those smarty-pants justices declared that Phillips had a right to be on the ballot and that the committee’s decision was nothing more than a quick and sloppy process. Can we say kangaroo court? The Wisconsin high court really came through for fairness and justice!
Of course, Phillips couldn’t wait to gloat about his victory. Immediately after the decision, he made sure to let everyone know that he was the hero in this story. He praised the judiciary for “protecting democracy,” as if his inclusion on the ballot was some monumental triumph. Sorry, Phillips, but this victory doesn’t make you a hero. It just means you’ll have the opportunity to lose to President Biden in the primary. Better luck next time!
But Phillips doesn’t know when to quit. He keeps criticizing his own party, blaming them for rigging the election process in favor of Biden. He claims that rank-and-file Democrats, including Black voters, are being suppressed and disenfranchised by Biden’s supporters. Oh please, Phillips! The only thing being suppressed here is the truth. It’s clear that he’s just bitter about the fact that he doesn’t stand a chance against Biden. Can’t handle a little healthy competition, can he?
While Phillips continues to fight his losing battle, Republicans can sit back and enjoy the show. It’s refreshing to see a bit of chaos in the Democratic Party. Maybe this little blip on the electoral radar will be a wake-up call for them. They can’t just coronate Biden as their candidate without facing some opposition. Democracy works best when candidates actually have to fight for the privilege of representing their party. Maybe next time, Phillips will learn that lesson.
