The CNN moment and the Atlantic essay
Julia Curlee, a transgender former CIA officer who says she served as a presidential-daily briefer, published a candid Atlantic essay and gave follow-up interviews. In them she said, “No one has affirmed my gender identity quite like Mike Pence” and described being treated with “great dignity” while working in his office. CNN’s Dana Bash quoted that praise to Pence during an interview from Kyiv, and he replied that he was “heartened” and emphasized treating people with “decency and respect.” That exchange, simple as it was, lit up the news cycle.
Don’t confuse kindness with policy
Here’s the point conservatives should not lose: a cordial moment does not erase a policy record. Mike Pence has a long history of conservative positions on social issues. A single anecdote about personal decency from a staffer does not change the fact that policy choices affect millions. If you’re tempted to applaud a media outlet for humanizing a past official, remember media outlets love to crown their favorites — and then call them heroes when the timing suits a narrative. If CNN is fawning, that’s not a political endorsement you should crave.
Personnel decisions deserve answers
Curlee’s account goes beyond a feel-good memory; she alleges she was targeted and later removed from a National Security Council role after being outed. That raises real questions about staffing, process, and who made those calls. Conservatives who care about rule of law and due process should demand a straightforward account of personnel actions. We should want transparency whether the subject is a sympathetic staffer or someone whose politics we oppose.
What the GOP needs to remember
The Republican Party is not built on media applause. It’s built on clear principles, leadership that defends those principles, and candid accountability for actions taken in office. If the choice is between a politician who courts bipartisan sympathy with polished niceties or a leader who fights for conservative victories, conservatives know which one actually moves the country. A kind word about an individual is fine. But don’t let one warm quote fool you into thinking a long policy record has suddenly been rewritten by cable TV charm.
